This Kind of Trouble is an emotionally charged, multigenerational story about forbidden love, family secrets, cultural identity, mental health, and the lasting consequences of the past.The story begins in 1960s Lagos, shortly after Nigerian independence. Margaret, a headstrong young Nigerian woman, meets Benjamin, a British-born man who has come to Nigeria to explore his heritage following the death of his half-Nigerian father. They fall deeply in love, but their relationship becomes entangled with painful events in their families' pasts. As the couple's relationship develops, they discover that their histories are connected in ways they could not have anticipated. The burden of these revelations, together with Margaret's deteriorating mental health, eventually causes the couple to separate.
Forty years later, in 2005, Margaret is living in an affluent gated community in Lagos, while Benjamin lives alone in Atlanta and struggles with his health and uncertainty about his future. Their lives are unexpectedly drawn together again when their grandson begins displaying troubling signs reminiscent of Margaret's earlier struggles.
